Changing Your Limited Licence Conditions
Life keeps moving during a disqualification. Jobs change, rosters change, people move house. Your Limited Licence does not move with them.
The order is the licence
A Limited Licence lets you drive only for the purpose, vehicle, days, times and area set out in the court order [1]. The card itself tells you to drive under the conditions of the order [3]. A new contract, a text from your manager or a letter from your employer does not change any of that.
Driving outside the order is an offence under section 32(1) [1]. A disqualification for that offence is one you cannot get another Limited Licence for [1].
Go back to the court
The Land Transport Act does not set out a separate process just for changing conditions. Section 105 lets a court make an order at any time [1], so the way to get different conditions is to go back to the District Court and ask for a new or amended order. Ask the court registry how it wants the application filed and whether a fee applies.
Until a new order is made and you are licensed under it, keep to the one you have.
Typical changes
- Hours. A new roster, or a move to nights.
- Area or route. A new workplace, new job sites or a house move.
- Vehicle. A different work vehicle or a new employer's fleet.
- Purpose. A new job, or a new care need.
What to bring
Treat the part that is changing like a fresh application:
- an affidavit explaining what changed and why the current order no longer covers your real needs [2]
- an affidavit from your employer for any work change, because a letter is generally not enough [2]
- rosters, contracts, job sheets or appointment letters that show the change
- an amended draft order, clearly labelled as amended, with the changes marked [2]
- an updated boundary map that matches the written order exactly [2]
Every affidavit is signed only in front of the person who witnesses it, and the easiest place to do that is at the court when you file. Never sign one in advance.
Ask only for what changed
The court can only authorise the least driving needed to relieve the hardship [1]. A request that quietly widens everything is likely to be questioned. Ask for the change your new circumstances need, and show why.
If the court says no
If the court refuses an application, a further application about the same disqualification or suspension generally cannot be considered for 3 months unless there is relevant new evidence [1]. Get the request right the first time.

Frequently asked questions
Can I drive the new hours while I wait?
No. Only the order you have counts.
My employer changed my roster. Is their letter enough?
No. Only a court order changes your conditions.
Can I ask for extra hours just in case?
The court grants only the least driving needed, so ask for hours you can show you need.
