Just got a demerit suspension notice? Do this now
Take a breath. Here's what to do, in order.
1. Check the start date on the notice
Your suspension starts on the date shown. From that day, you can't drive at all. That includes a quick trip, a work ute, or someone else's car.
2. Stop driving from that date
This is the one that matters most. If you're caught driving while suspended, you'll lose far more than 3 months, and you'll lose the chance of a limited licence for it.
3. Work out what you actually need to drive for
Work? Driving for your job? School runs? Write it down. Those are the reasons a limited licence can cover.
4. Tell your employer
You'll usually need them on board, because the court wants to see why you need to drive for work. The sooner they know, the easier it is.
5. Apply for a limited licence
With demerits there's no waiting period, so the only thing between you and driving legally again is getting your paperwork right. That's our job.
