Can I Drive a Work Vehicle on a Limited Licence?
Lots of people who need a work licence do not drive their own car for work at all. They drive a company ute, a pool car, a van or a fleet vehicle that changes from day to day. That is fine, but it has to be in the order.
The order names the vehicle
A Limited Licence order must specify the particular vehicle, or the type of vehicle, you may drive [1]. If the order says "Toyota Corolla, registration ABC123" and you jump in the work van, you are outside your conditions.
Driving contrary to a Limited Licence is an offence under section 32(1) [1], and a disqualification for it is one you cannot get another Limited Licence for [1].
One vehicle or a type?
- Always the same vehicle? Give its details.
- Different vehicles from a fleet? Ask for a type, such as "any company owned light vehicle", and explain why.
- Your own car for some trips and a work vehicle for others? Say so, and cover both.
The court only allows the least driving needed to relieve the hardship [1]. A broad request needs a good reason, backed by evidence.
Evidence that helps
- A job description or employment agreement showing driving is part of the role.
- An affidavit from your employer describing the vehicles and how they are allocated [3].
- Rosters or job sheets showing where the vehicle goes.
Times and places matter too
The order also sets the purpose, hours and routes or area [1]. A company vehicle does not give you wider permission. If the work van goes home with you each night, the order needs to cover that trip.
Check with your employer
Some employers have their own rules or insurance conditions about staff on Limited Licences. Have that conversation before you rely on the work vehicle in your application.
If your boss checks licences, read what your employer sees on TORO or Driver Check and how to tell your employer. Our Limited Licence for work page covers the rest.

Frequently asked questions
Can I drive a work vehicle not named in my order?
No. You can only drive what the order allows.
Can the order cover more than one vehicle?
The Act allows a particular vehicle or a type of vehicle, so a type can cover several vehicles if the court agrees.
Do I need my employer's help?
For work hardship, the practice note expects an employer affidavit. It is especially useful when the vehicle belongs to them.
