Two Jobs and One Limited Licence

Plenty of Kiwis work more than one job. A day job and weekend shifts. Two part time roles. Contract work for a few businesses. One Limited Licence application can ask to cover all of it. But every job has to stand on its own evidence.

One order, every job spelled out

The court must set out the purpose of the licence, the vehicle or type of vehicle, and the days and times you can drive [1]. With two jobs, the order has to work for both. That means both sets of hours, both workplaces and any vehicle each job needs.

The court can only grant the least driving needed to relieve the hardship [1]. A combined request that adds up to "drive whenever" will not get far. Show each job separately, then show how they fit together.

An affidavit from each employer

Where your hardship is about work, the practice note expects an affidavit from the employer [2]. A letter from the employer will generally be regarded as not enough [2]. With two jobs, get an affidavit from each employer you are relying on.

Each one should cover the basics for that job: who the business is, your role, your usual days and hours, and whether you are on call [4]. Anyone who swears an affidavit for you may be asked to come to court and answer questions about it, unless the parties agree that is not needed [1][2].

Your own affidavit ties it together

Your affidavit is where the pieces meet. For each job, set out:

  • the employer's name and address, and your role [4]
  • your usual days and hours, and any on call work [4]
  • where you need to drive, and in which vehicle [4]
  • why there is no other way to get there, such as no public transport at that hour [4]
  • what you lose if you cannot drive to that job

Then show the full week. If the jobs run back to back, say so. If a shift at one ends late and the other starts early, say so. Facts, not assertions [2].

Self employed on the side?

If one of your jobs is your own business, there is no employer to swear for it. Your affidavit needs enough financial information for the court to judge the hardship, such as income and expenses [2]. See our page on Limited Licences for the self employed.

Different vehicles

If one job uses your own car and the other a work ute, both need to be in the order [1]. You can only be authorised to drive a class of vehicle you held a licence for immediately before you lost your licence [1]. More on that in Limited Licence for a company vehicle.

Every affidavit is signed only in front of the person who witnesses it, and the easiest place to do that is at the court when you file. Never sign one in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Can one Limited Licence cover two jobs?

Yes, if the order sets out the driving each job needs and the court is satisfied it is the least needed.

Do I need an affidavit from both employers?

Where the hardship is about work, the practice note expects an employer affidavit, and a letter is generally not enough.

What if one job is on call?

Say so, with the hours you are usually rostered on call. See [Limited Licence for shift work](/blog/limited-licence-shift-work).
